What a tempo detector measures

Tempo is the speed of a musical pulse. BPM turns that sensation into a useful number: 60 BPM is one beat per second, 120 BPM is two.

A browser tempo detector begins with decoded audio samples, not a title or database entry. It looks for events that often align with the beat: kick and snare attacks, claps, bass notes, chord changes, and other sudden rises in energy. These events are called onsets.

BPMDetector builds an onset envelope and checks how strongly it repeats at different intervals. A regular peak every half second supports 120 BPM. The winning interval becomes the estimate, while competing intervals affect the confidence message.

The process is statistical rather than magical. A detector does not know which event a musician considers “the beat.” It measures repetition and selects the most plausible musical interpretation. That is why a transparent confidence estimate and alternate half-time or double-time values are useful.

Steady tempo, changing tempo, and rubato

When one BPM works

Electronic dance music, programmed pop, drum loops, and tracks recorded to a click usually have a stable tempo. A single BPM describes most of the track, and automatic detection can be highly confident.

When tempo moves

Live bands may drift naturally. Classical performances and solo passages may use rubato—deliberate expressive speeding and slowing. Film music can follow picture with a detailed tempo map. One result may then represent an average or the section with the clearest rhythm.

When the beat is ambiguous

Syncopated rhythms emphasize spaces between beats. Ambient music may lack sharp attacks. Odd meters organize pulses into groups that a basic detector does not label. In each case, the audio can support several mathematically reasonable answers.

How to verify

Listen to the section you intend to use and tap the beat you would count aloud. If your tap is near half or twice the automatic value, the detector probably found the same timing at a different metrical level.
