Three quick steps

How to find BPM in three steps

The analyzer turns rhythmic changes in your audio into a reliable tempo estimate—without sending a byte to a server.

  1. 01

    Drop audio

Choose a song, loop, stem, or demo from your phone or computer. The file opens only inside your browser.

  2. 02

    Analyze locally

The detector measures changes in energy, finds likely onsets, and compares repeating beat intervals.

  3. 03

    Get the BPM

See the strongest tempo, a confidence estimate, and half- or double-time options. Tap along for a human check.

Built for the session

A faster, private BPM finder

DJs, producers, musicians, dancers, and video editors need a number they can use—not an account form or a catalog search. This free BPM finder analyzes your actual file.

Free by default

No credits, trial, account, ads, or artificial file limits. Open the page and start finding beats.

Private processing

Your audio never leaves your device. That matters for unreleased demos, client work, and private recordings.

Works offline

Once this page is cached, the core tool can run without a connection. Handy in a booth, studio, or on the road.

Common formats

Analyze MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, and OGG when the audio codec is supported by your browser.

Made for mobile

Large targets, a legible readout, and drag-and-drop alternatives make the tool comfortable on any screen.

Tempo context

Compare half-time and double-time values so the result matches the way you count the groove.

From waveform to pulse

What a tempo detector listens for

BPM means beats per minute: 120 BPM describes two beats every second. A tempo detector does not understand a song like a musician does. It looks for measurable events that often line up with the beat—kick drums, snares, claps, bass attacks, chord changes, and other sudden rises in energy.

This analyzer mixes the decoded signal to mono, samples a useful portion of the track, and builds an onset envelope from frame-to-frame energy changes. It then checks how strongly that envelope repeats across musically plausible intervals. The best-supported interval becomes the estimated BPM. A confidence score reflects how clearly the winning pulse stands above competing possibilities.

Tempo is sometimes ambiguous. A 70 BPM hip-hop groove can also be counted at 140 BPM; a sparse 128 BPM breakdown may suggest 64. That is not necessarily a detection error—it is a choice of metrical level. The half-time and double-time controls make that choice explicit, while Tap Tempo lets your ears make the final call.

Need more than tempo?

Pair BPM with musical key

Tempo measures speed; musical key describes tonal center. This tool focuses on reliable, private BPM analysis rather than guessing a key from limited evidence.

Use the dedicated Key BPM Detector guide for harmonic mixing, Camelot notation, and a workflow that checks both signals together.

Useful answers

BPM detector FAQ

How do I use the BPM detector with an MP3?+

Drop an MP3 onto the analyzer or choose it from your device. Your browser decodes and analyzes it locally, then displays an estimated BPM and confidence level. Nothing is uploaded.

Can I use the BPM detector by tapping?+

Yes. Press Tap—or the space bar when you are not focused on another control—in time with at least four beats. The readout averages recent intervals, which is useful for checking the automatic result.

Is this a live BPM detector?+

It analyzes complete audio files immediately in your browser. It does not continuously listen through your microphone, so it is live local analysis rather than live room monitoring.

Can it detect BPM from a YouTube link?+

No. This tool does not download or extract audio from YouTube. Use an audio file you own or have permission to analyze, then drop that file into the detector.

Does the BPM detector use my microphone?+

No microphone permission is requested. If a song is playing nearby, use Tap Tempo while listening.

Which audio formats work?+

MP3 and WAV have broad support. M4A, AAC, and OGG depend on the codecs built into your browser and operating system. If a format cannot be decoded, converting it to WAV is the most reliable fix.

Why is the result half or double the tempo I expect?+

Half-time and double-time rhythms share related beat spacing. Use the alternate values below the result or Tap Tempo to choose the interpretation that matches how you count the music.

Is the BPM analyzer private and free?+

Yes. It is free, has no ads, and processes audio inside your browser. Your audio never leaves your device.
